El Rastro Market (Sundays)
El Rastro, located in the Madrid de los Austrias, is given over to Madrid's bustling flea market. It's the perfect way to while away a Sunday. Once you have worked up an appetite examining an abundance of things old and new (probably none of which you will buy), slip off to one of the numerous tapas bars or hearty restaurants.

Museo del Prado
Madrid's Museo del Prado houses a dazzling permanent collection of some 7000 paintings, especially noted for its Flemish, Dutch, Spanish and Italian works. This gallery ranks with the top five in the world and is an absolute must-see.

Teatro Real
Originally built in 1850 and recently renovated, Madrid's Teatro Real now hosts opera, concerts and ballet, with a policy of being open to all.One of the most beautiful of European lyric theatres, it can seat between 1440 and 1750, depending on the size of orchestra (and whether it is needed at all).

Telefonica Open de Madrid (October every year)
Madrid's beautiful Club de Campo hosts the Telefonica Open. Coming as it does a couple of weeks before the Volvo Masters, many of the top names in European golf use the event as preparation. Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez won the 2003 tournament.

Madrid International Fashion Week (Every 6 months)
The Juan Carlos I Exhibition Centre in Madrid hosts International Fashion Week (SIMM), the most important female fashion exhibition in the country. In 2005 Madrid celebrated 27 years of SIMM, demonstrating the maturity of the Spanish fashion industry within Europe. The quality and the competitive price of Spanish goods are widely recognised on the international market, and this is reflected in the increasing numbers of foreign exhibitors at the exhibition.
