Posture is the 4th Fundamental of
Golf that a Beginner should learn.
What is Posture?
Posture is how you position your Body to the Golf Ball, or
put in simpler terms how you bend or angle your Body.
Why is Posture important?
Posture is very important because it will give you Balance
and Power when you swing the club. Without it you will not
be able to hit the ball very well and progress will be very
slow.
How and Why does Posture give you Balance
and Power?
Have you ever tried Yoga! Skiing, Horse Riding, Tennis or
even typing at a desk, all of these activities and many others
require correct Posture. Correct Posture is so important in
most things you do in order to be able to do them well and
importantly protect your back.
So How do I get a correct Posture?

Look at the diagram, note that the back is nice and straight
and that the spine is slightly titled over the Ball. Note
that the legs are slightly bent and the arms are just hanging
down freely.
1. Stand upright nice and tall with a straight back.
2. Maintaining a straight back start to tilt your upper Body
{ titling from the hips } over the Ball until
you start to experience a loss of balance, as if you feel
you are just about to fall over on your face and all your
weight moves on to your toes.
3. Now simply flex your knees a little so your legs are slightly
bent, this will automatically push your weight
back towards the balls of the feet { the Balls of
the feet is the sole of the foot where the bulbous pad meets
up with the toes. In simple terms do not favour
too much weight on your toes or heels.
4. You now have the perfect posture.
When you have successfully completed the posture you should
be feeling some of the following:
A lot of pressure on the Balls of the feet and a little pressure
on the Big Toes and Heels.
Pressure in the Knee caps and Thighs.
The feeling that the Buttocks are lifting and sticking out.
Pressure in the Small of the Back
A Straight Back.
Feeling that your face is leaning over the Ball.
Your arms are hanging down freely.
Your Head is being held up.
In all it should be feeling slightly uncomfortable, because
you are positioning yourself in an unnatural Posture. Done
correctly you have created a lot of Live Tension in the Back
and Legs, which is essential if we are to create maximum Power
and Balance. You should be feeling Springy as if you could
jump up high.
It is very easy to allow yourself to go what I call ‘Soggy’.
This is when you let your self get comfortable and you allow
your muscles to go floppy, as such one collapses in a slump.
‘If you want Sloppy shots let your Posture go Sloppy’
‘If you want Power shots make your Posture Powerful’
You should try to imagine that you are a puppet on a strings
and whoever is holding the strings from up above, is keeping
you held upright and strong rather then letting you collapse
in a heap.
Posture is very important, try to learn as best you can,
go over this section so as you have a good understanding of
what constitutes Great Posture.
Its a far easier option to go for a sloppy Posture, because
it is more comfortable. Do Not Allow Your Self the Luxury!
Come on lets work hard and get this Posture right. Do not
underestimate the Power of Posture, you will be accelerating
your improvement at over 100%. |
